OMNIA now does Virtual Interfaith Peacemaker Team training on Zoom.

Virtual Interfaith Peacemaker Team Training

The Virtual Interfaith Peacemaker Team training sessions are held on four Saturdays. Each session is three hours long. There will also be video lessons and other assignments in between. The purpose of the training is to build Interfaith Peacemaker Teams both virtually, and locally in communities where participants live. The dates for the next series will be announced soon.

Following the deadly bombing on Easter Sunday, 2019 killing over 250 people, OMNIA’s National Coordinator, Bishop Kumara Illangasinghe said on national TV, that the answer to such violence is an Interfaith Peacemaker Team in every village in Sri Lanka.

Every Village A Peacemaker Village

In 35 Interfaith Peacemaker Teams located in the villages around the city of Kandy, in the Eastern Province town of Batticaloa and in Jaffna in the North, Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim and Christian leaders come together to address some of the most intractable issues that arise from the context.

Nigeria

Antagonism between Muslims and Christians created a social chasm on which the Boko Haram insurgency capitalized to recruit young people. Today in Gombe State this space is being reclaimed, and their ability to recruit is being reduced.

Rev. Abare Kallah, OMNIA’s National Coordinator in Nigeria now reports 86 Interfaith Peacemaker Teams in Gombe State. Muslim and Christian leaders collaborate, build power and act strategically on issues of justice and peace.

Bangladesh

Many in our IP Teams are daily-wage earners. Covid-19 restrictions on movement caused them severe hardship. Rev. David Das, OMNIA’s National Coordinator in Bangladesh remarked, “If they don’t die of Covid, they’ll die of hunger.”

The Dilemma – Die From COVID Or Die From Hunger?

Despite this, IP Teams in Bangladesh are increasing. Today, 29 IP Teams meet in villages around Dhaka, in Old Dhaka’s slum areas and in the Chittagong hills. Government policy has made mobile communications affordable, so even some of the poorest people can connect, easing a great deal of distress.

Gombe: The Second Safest State in Nigeria

The video on the left is from a TV news broadcast in Gombe City at the beginning of November. When we started in Gombe 6 years ago, the state had significant levels of Boko Haram violence. Today, the violence has significantly reduced. The violence caused by cattle herders on crop farmers is still an issue, but as you would hear in the video, we are working to address that as well. The governor of the state gave OMNIA its Peace and Security Award for the role of Interfaith Peacemaker Teams in reducing violence in the state. Click here to read more.
